My homemade Halloween: my recipes and tips despite my allergies
A homemade menu, a few adaptations and ideas for Halloween
Yesterday, we celebrated Halloween! As is often the case when you have food allergies, it isn’t always easy to find recipes that work. Some recipes look delicious but contain ingredients we can’t eat.
So we search, we think and we adapt the recipes so they fit our allergies.
In this blog, I’m sharing some of the adaptations I made to prepare our Halloween menu. From puff pastry mummies to the chocolate dessert, I’ll show you what we made and how we adapted some of the recipes.
I hope my ideas will inspire you and help you find new ways to treat yourself, even with food allergies!

The chocolate graveyard
For dessert, I wanted to make something with chocolate, with a special Halloween decoration.
To find a recipe suited to my allergies, I had to do some research to find an egg-free chocolate cream. I found this recipe on the Papilles et Pupilles website and followed it exactly: the egg-free chocolate cream recipe (in French).
For the decoration, we added pieces of chocolate and a little biscuit marked “RIP”, like a gravestone. It makes a little graveyard treat, perfect for Halloween!

Sausage puff pastry mummies
For this recipe, we were inspired by the Halloween sausage puff pastry mummies on CuisineAZ (in French).
Our adaptation was the glaze: the original recipe uses egg to make the puff pastry golden. As I’m allergic to eggs, we replaced the egg wash with milk.
It’s a small change that let us make these little mummies for our Halloween meal!

Mummy toasts
To complete our Halloween menu, we made mummy-shaped toasts with tomato sauce, cheese and olives for the eyes.

Monster mini sandwiches
We also made decorated mini sandwiches to give them a little monster look. A fun idea to round off a Halloween meal!
Here’s the recipe that inspired us: the crazy Halloween mini sandwiches on CuisineAZ (in French).

Bloody hot dogs
To finish the savoury recipes, we made hot dogs with ketchup for a bloody effect. A really simple idea that works very well for Halloween!

A few precautions when cooking with allergies
I’m allergic to eggs, tree nuts, legumes, mustard, sesame and lupin. So you have to pay attention to the ingredients you use, even in recipes that look simple.
Here are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Read the labels of the products you use, such as bread, puff pastry, sausages, chocolate and sauces.
- Check the ingredients and any warnings about possible traces of allergens.
- Watch out for cross-contamination, for example with utensils or work surfaces.
- Look for suitable recipes or think about possible adaptations, while checking that the replacement ingredients are right for your allergies.
An egg-free recipe isn’t necessarily suitable for other allergies: always check the ingredients of every product.
To conclude
I know that finding recipes suited to your food allergies isn’t always easy and sometimes takes a bit of research.
For our Halloween, I looked for an egg-free chocolate cream recipe and replaced the egg wash with milk for the puff pastry mummies.
I hope this article gives you ideas to prepare a fun and delicious Halloween meal too!
